Overview

This is a training course in the use of network planning and scheduling techniques using Microsoft Project.This course explains core project management concepts and combines lectures with hands-on exercises using Microsoft Project 98 and previous releases. The course is taught in-house and can be customized to address specific organization needs, people and projects. The course is intended for project managers, their team members and support personnel. Upper management often attends the opening session, making this an ideal kick-off for new projects.

The course is also valuable to organizations that are evaluating project management concepts and software. The course combines project management fundamentals with Microsoft Project software training. By maintaining a balance between the features and capabilities of the software with the essential processes of project management, the course emphasizes the need for this balance in a successful project.
Customized versions of the course often contain an organization-specific case study.

AGENDA

Introduction and Overview of Techniques

Participants introduce themselves and their specific requirements so that their needs may be addressed, both formally and informally, during the course. The uses and users of computerized project management are reviewed and:

• Attention is directed to its benefits and justification and to its impact on the project organization.

• Project data and communication requirements are reviewed.

• Project management techniques are summarized, with emphasis on how to judge their applicability and effectiveness to management.

• The keys to effective implementation are covered.

• This module may be attended by upper managment.
  

Project Networking and Schedule Calculations The precedence diagramming method (PDM) of networking is covered.

• The forward pass, backward pass, float and critical path calculations are explained and illustrated.

• The effect of imposed dates and calendars on these calculations is covered.

• The importance of standardized network logic is discussed.

• Students are assigned a project network to prepare and calculate using Microsoft Project.
